Opposition came from both sides of the aisle, with 22 Republicans and 95 Democrats voting no. Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee.<\/p>\n<p>Buchanan, speaking to The Hill, argued the change would deliver tangible benefits for ordinary Americans. \u201cFloridians and Americans across the country are tired of the biannual time change, and the evidence is clear that permanent daylight saving time can improve public health, reduce traffic accidents, lower crime and encourage more outdoor activity. Ending the clock change is a commonsense reform that will improve everyday life for millions of Americans,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Trump has pushed to end the twice-yearly clock switch since returning to office, though similar efforts have stalled before despite gaining momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters of ending the practice point to research undercutting the original rationale for daylight saving time. A 2008 study from the National Bureau of Economic Research found that, contrary to the policy\u2019s intent, daylight saving time actually increases residential electricity demand by roughly 1 percent, as savings on lighting are offset by higher heating and cooling use.<\/p>\n<p>Safety researchers have also flagged risks tied to the time shift itself. Data from the Fatal Accident Reporting System shows a 17 percent spike in traffic fatalities the Monday after clocks spring forward, with elevated crash rates persisting for nearly a week.
