Yale University is in negotiations with the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) for a resolution after the Trump administration found alleged racial discrimination in its medical school\u2019s admissions processes.<\/p>\n

ABC News reports that Yale President Maurie McInnis also confirmed for the first time that the DOJ\u2019s inquiry extends beyond Yale\u2019s medical school, with two pending investigations into admissions processes at Yale College and Yale Law School.<\/p>\n

In a May 14 press release, the DOJ said Yale\u2019s documents show that its leadership intentionally selected applicants based on their race.<\/p>\n

The Department of Justice has found that Yale School of Medicine continues to discriminate against applicants based on race, with Black applicants receiving up to 29 times higher odds of an interview than an equally qualified Asian applicant. \ud83d\udea8\ud83d\udea8<\/p>\n

\nAccording to the DOJ, the school\u2019s documents show that Yale administrators\u00a0studied how to use racial proxies to circumvent the Supreme Court\u2019s prohibition on using race to select students.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s data revealed that Black and Hispanic students had a much higher chance of admission to Yale than White or Asian students with the same test scores.<\/p>\n

In a statement issued on Monday, McInnes said that university-wide changes have been made to admissions processes and that, \u201cWe now state explicitly that academic strength has long been the predominant criterion in our holistic evaluation of applicants.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Yale Daily News, the decision to engage in talks with the DOJ has sparked some pointed backlash from students and faculty at Yale, although McInnes described the process as a \u201crequired and reasonable step\u201d toward reaching a voluntary resolution.<\/p>\n

McInnes said, \u201cThese investigations concern university compliance with federal law\u2026As a university committed to the rule of law, we take that obligation seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yale\u2019s negotiations with the DOJ follow a string of settlements between American universities and the Trump administration.<\/p>\n

Some universities have pushed back against the Trump administration, most notably Harvard University, which is currently fighting DOJ lawsuits over its admissions records and handling of campus protests, according to ABC News.<\/p>\n

The Yale American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has announced it is actively reviewing legal options and considering a lawsuit against the university administration to assert faculty rights and safeguard institutional independence.<\/span><\/p>\n
