Senate Democrats are demanding the Pentagon justify Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth\u2019s newly announced plan to screen troops\u2019 testosterone levels, the latest instance of resistance from a party that has spent years slow-walking efforts to restore basic health and fitness standards across the armed forces.<\/p>\n

Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut, Mazie Hirono of Hawaii, Gary Peters of Michigan, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Ruben Gallego of Arizona sent Hegseth a letter last week pressing for details on cost, implementation and the scientific rationale behind the directive, which requires service members age 30 and older to have their testosterone checked during annual physical exams. Troops under 30 may opt in voluntarily, and any resulting treatment remains voluntary regardless of age.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Department has provided no evidence that this sweeping new policy will improve force readiness or health, nor has it explained the scientific basis, costs, or risks associated with implementing it across the force,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n

Yet the policy fits squarely within Hegseth\u2019s effort to restore a fitness culture inside the Pentagon. Since taking office, Hegseth has pushed to overhaul fitness tests, revise body-fat standards and restore emphasis on physical readiness, earning attention for training alongside troops instead of managing from behind a desk.<\/p>\n

Some in the fitness community welcomed the change, noting troops seeking testosterone therapy through Tricare have long faced a cumbersome approval process. \u201cI think this is a great idea on paper, but we need to be careful about how it\u2019s implemented,\u201d said one fitness-coaching official, speaking anonymously because they were not authorized to talk to the media.<\/p>\n
