The Department of Justice has determined that the University of California San Diego School of Medicine broke federal civil rights law by secretly weighing applicants\u2019 race during the admissions process, according to findings announced Monday.<\/p>\n

Federal investigators say the medical school ran what they described as a \u201cshadow application process\u201d that let admissions staff single out black and Hispanic candidates for preferential treatment, even after the Supreme Court\u2019s 2023 ruling barred colleges from considering race in admissions.<\/p>\n

Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, who leads the DOJ\u2019s Civil Rights Division, said the school\u2019s approach amounted to an end-run around federal law and the high court\u2019s decision in the Harvard affirmative-action case.<\/p>\n

\u201cSan Diego Med\u2019s blatant efforts to prioritize race are illegal, and we will end these practices,\u201d Dhillon said in a statement.<\/p>\n

She said the school largely set aside objective measures such as MCAT scores and grade-point averages in favor of a covert racial sorting system. \u201cRather than rely on MCAT scores or GPA, San Diego Med\u2019s shadow application process unlawfully judged applicants for admission based on their race,\u201d Dhillon said.<\/p>\n

According to the DOJ, admissions officers mined applicants\u2019 answers to essay questions about personal \u201chardship\u201d \u2014 prompts asking students how they had \u201covercome\u201d adversity \u2014 to infer which candidates were black or Hispanic. Those applicants were then funneled toward acceptance, regardless of whether their academic credentials matched those of their peers.<\/p>\n

The Justice Department\u2019s letter to the university, which detailed the probe\u2019s findings, did not mince words. \u201cSan Diego Med has intentionally discriminated against applicants by granting and denying admission based on their race,\u201d Dhillon wrote, adding, \u201cIt is likely this discrimination is ongoing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dhillon said the hardship questions functioned as a stand-in for race, specifically so the school could keep pursuing the kind of diversity-driven admissions the Supreme Court outlawed. \u201cTo racially diversify its classes, San Diego Med created an evaluation process that uses \u2018hardship\u2019 as a racial proxy, specifically to achieve its diversity agenda,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n

The numbers cited by the DOJ illustrate a notable gap. Black and Hispanic applicants who were admitted needed roughly a 3.1 GPA and average standardized test scores, while white and Asian applicants needed a 3.50 GPA and MCAT scores in the 83rd percentile or better to win a seat. Black applicants were accepted at more than twice the rate of white applicants, the DOJ found.<\/p>\n

The findings stem from an investigation opened in March that examined internal university records and admissions data spanning 2019 through last year, the DOJ said.<\/p>\n

The Civil Rights Act of 1964 bars race discrimination by institutions receiving federal funds, and the Supreme Court\u2019s 2023 decision striking down race-conscious admissions policies at Harvard and the University of North Carolina extended that prohibition explicitly to college admissions nationwide.<\/p>\n
