Massachusetts Democrats are advancing legislation that would create a permanent state commission focused on protecting and promoting Islam.<\/p>\n

Bill S.2134 has cleared initial committees and is currently in the state\u2019s Senate Ways & Means Committee.<\/p>\n

Massachusetts-based radio talk show host Jeffrey Kuhner sounded the alarm about the bill on X, saying it \u201cguarantees Muslims will be appointed and hired across all levels of government.\u201d<\/p>\n

Indeed, no other religion has ever received this type of preferential treatment.<\/p>\n

Members of the pro-Islam commission would be appointed by the governor, attorney general, legislative leaders, and \u201cracial equity, civil rights and inclusion\u201d committee chairs.<\/p>\n

The 11-member body would:<\/p>\n

\u2013 Promote research on issues affecting Muslim communities
\n\u2013 Inform the public, media and local governments on issues affecting American Muslims
\n\u2013 Foster \u201cunity\u201d among Muslims
\n\u2013 Identify, evaluate and combat reported cases of \u201cIslamophobia\u201d
\n\u2013 Recommend qualified Muslims for appointive government positions at all levels
\n\u2013 Advise on policy and legislation
\n\u2013 Assess programs and practices in all state agencies as they affect American Muslims<\/p>\n

The bill states that the commission \u201cmay request from all state agencies whatever information and assistance the commission requires.\u201d<\/p>\n

The body would also be allowed to accept and solicit funds, \u201cincluding any gifts, donations, grants, or bequests, or any federal funds for any of the purposes of this section.\u201d<\/p>\n

These funds would be deposited in a separate account with the state secretary\u2019s office and be expended by the commission in accordance with the law.<\/p>\n

The legislation has raised serious Constitutional issues because it creates the first permanent state government commission built around a single religion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt ends separation of church & state in favor of Islam,\u201d Kuhner argued on X. \u201cSTOP IT NOW!\u201d<\/p>\n

If passed, Bill S.2134 would almost certainly face First Amendment challenges.<\/p>\n
