\u201cThe purpose of a university should be to make a son as unlike his father as possible.\u201d These radical words were spoken in 1909 by Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton, four years before he became the 28th president of the United States.<\/p>\n

In 1916, education reformer\u00a0John Dewey\u00a0began articulating what we now call \u201csocial justice.\u201d At the same time,\u00a0Antonio Gramsci, an Italian Marxist, emerged on the scene. He believed that spreading revolutionary ideology slowly and incrementally was most effective. He thought that over time enough people would be won over to Marxist thought. His approach eventually became known as the \u201clong march through the institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 1923, a group of professors known as the Frankfurt School came to prominence. These German Marxists\u2014notably Theodore Adorno, Max Horkheimer, and Herbert Marcuse\u2014harbored a deep disdain for capitalism and traditional morals. Unfortunately, they did not remain in their homeland for long. Adolph Hitler\u2019s rise to power forced them to leave Germany, and they reemerged at Columbia University in New York City in 1935.<\/p>\n

Most recently, the country has endured Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), Critical Race Theory (CRT), Black Lives Matter (BLM), gender fluidity, wokeism, and related movements, all of which have waxed and waned in our culture.<\/p>\n
