President Donald Trump announced a sweeping $22 billion overhaul of Dulles International Airport on Wednesday, delivering on his promise to fix what he has repeatedly called one of the worst-designed airports in the world.<\/p>\n

The plan would tear out the airport\u2019s much-maligned \u201cmobile lounges,\u201d the bus-like vehicles that have shuttled international travelers across the tarmac since the airport opened in 1962, replacing them with an underground train and a central walking tunnel.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s considered one of the worst airports anywhere in the world. We\u2019re going to make it maybe the best with some hard work,\u201d Trump said at the White House event. \u201cWe\u2019re gonna make this something special.\u201d<\/p>\n

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy did not mince words about the vehicles being scrapped, telling reporters Tuesday they belong in a museum, not a modern airport. \u201cIt looks like it\u2019s from \u2018Star Wars,\u2019 and they\u2019re slow and people are angry about them,\u201d Duffy said. \u201cWe are going to get rid of those.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement is the latest example of the Trump administration applying private-sector urgency to a federal transportation system that critics say has languished for decades. Rather than relying solely on taxpayer dollars, the project will draw on airport-generated revenue and airline contributions, according to Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority CEO Jack Potter, who joined Trump alongside United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby.<\/p>\n

United, which operates its largest hub at Dulles, had already been pushing for the rail option earlier this year. Kirby said Wednesday the new design \u201cworks great for the airline,\u201d a rare instance of a major carrier and the White House quickly aligning on an infrastructure fix debated for years under previous administrations.<\/p>\n

Trump said the project will still require congressional approval, a step that could test lawmakers\u2019 appetite for backing an infrastructure priority closely tied to the president.<\/p>\n

The plan also calls for a parking garage holding 32,000 vehicles positioned directly across from the terminal. \u201cPeople literally will be able to park their car and walk 15 yards and they will be in the terminal,\u201d Trump said. The redesign promises expanded check-in areas and streamlined security screening to cut congestion, while preserving the terminal\u2019s iconic Eero Saarinen design.<\/p>\n

The Dulles project joins a string of aviation initiatives Trump has pursued in his second term, including modernization of the nation\u2019s aging air traffic control system and acceptance of a Boeing 747 gifted by Qatar to serve as a temporary Air Force One.<\/p>\n

Trump officials floated renaming Dulles after the president earlier this year, an idea Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., rejected. That proposal was not raised at Wednesday\u2019s announcement. Florida lawmakers took a similar step in March, renaming Palm Beach International Airport near Trump\u2019s Mar-a-Lago estate and changing its code from PBI to DJT.<\/p>\n

The renovation builds on the airports authority\u2019s long-range master plan, which maps out growth and modernization at Dulles over the next 25 years.<\/p>\n
