Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. sparred with CNN anchor Dana Bash on Sunday\u2019s \u201cState of the Union,\u201d repeatedly placing blame for the COVID-19 pandemic on former National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Anthony Fauci and insisting that safeguarding constitutional rights must come first in any future public health emergency. Bash herself called the interview \u201ccontentious.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bash pushed back, noting public health experts point to a mix of factors behind the pandemic\u2019s death toll, including gaps in health care access and the spread of misinformation, and reminded Kennedy that Fauci also served under President Donald Trump\u2019s first administration. Kennedy did not budge. \u201cAnthony Fauci was mismanaging the COVID pandemic and was doing it under the Biden administration. President Trump wanted to end the lockdowns,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Asked how the country should prepare for the next pandemic, Kennedy said the last response was badly mishandled. \u201cI mean, I think we did virtually everything wrong the last time,\u201d he said, adding that the \u201cprimary obligation\u201d going forward must be to \u201cprotect our constitutional rights.\u201d When Bash noted she was asking about pandemic preparedness rather than rights, Kennedy said suppressing dissent was itself one of the biggest errors. \u201cDoctors who are saying you\u2019re doing it wrong were being marginalized and vilified,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Kennedy then turned the criticism on Bash and her network, saying journalists were \u201cpart of the problem.\u201d Bash denied attacking him. \u201cI\u2019m not attacking you. I\u2019m asking questions about how to prevent the next pandemic,\u201d she said, adding that the COVID vaccine \u201cprevented deaths\u201d and that \u201cthere is data upon data upon data.\u201d Kennedy was unmoved. \u201cYou are saying nonsense. You are saying something that you cannot show me a single study that says that,\u201d he said, accusing CNN of scaring the public during the pandemic.<\/p>\n

The conversation then shifted to the measles outbreak, with Bash asking whether Kennedy bears responsibility as \u201cone of the leading voices questioning vaccine efficacy.\u201d Kennedy again pointed to Fauci and the lockdowns. \u201cThe reason we\u2019re having a measles outbreak is because of the COVID lockdowns, because people didn\u2019t, children during that period did not get vaccinated,\u201d he said. Pressed on camera, Kennedy voiced support for the measles vaccine, though the interview grew testy again when Bash asked about research into a vaccine-autism link and Kennedy raised concerns about Tylenol use during pregnancy, echoing remarks Trump has made about acetaminophen.<\/p>\n

The two also traded barbs directly. \u201cYou\u2019re rolling your eyes, Dana,\u201d Kennedy said. \u201cI am because I don\u2019t want to have you use our air to say this,\u201d Bash replied. Kennedy told her she probably did not understand the science because she is \u201cnot a scientist.\u201d Bash shot back, \u201cNeither are you.\u201d<\/p>\n

A CNN spokesperson defended Bash afterward, calling her a \u201cveteran journalist\u201d who \u201cconducted a newsmaking interview,\u201d and said the network stands behind her reporting and its coverage of the pandemic.<\/p>\n
