Manufacturer Compliant Technologies describes the equipment as a \u201cConductive Distraction and De-escalation Device.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The gloves can deliver an electrical shock when an officer makes direct contact with a person\u2019s skin, providing agents with another tool for gaining control of resistant suspects without resorting to more serious force.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cICE is constantly assessing the needs of our officers in the field to ensure they have the tools and equipment necessary to safely arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our country,\u201d a DHS spokesperson told ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>The spokesperson said any new technology undergoes a review to ensure it complies with law enforcement policies and standards. ICE officers also receive training in de-escalation and the appropriate use of force, DHS said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the manufacturer\u2019s user manual, an officer activates the glove by pressing a button. The device must touch exposed skin to work and is ineffective through clothing or hair.<\/p>\n<p>The American Civil Liberties Union criticized the proposed purchase, arguing the devices could be abused.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=1500\">War on Rowling Continues (Sans Facts)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cGiving immigration agents a concealed means of delivering terrible pain is a recipe for more harm to the public and less accountability,\u201d the organization said.<\/p>\n<p>Compliant Technologies declined to comment on the potential DHS purchase, according to ABC News.<\/p>\n<p>If ICE adopts the gloves, it would become the first federal agency to deploy the relatively new technology. Some local police departments and correctional facilities already use the devices.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal comes as the Trump administration intensifies immigration enforcement and seeks to give ICE officers additional resources to carry out arrests and deportations.<\/p>\n<p>ICE is also preparing to equip all agents with body-worn cameras by the end of August.
