President Donald Trump said Wednesday he expects to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year, signaling a renewed push for direct diplomacy despite Pyongyang publicly rejecting the prospect of a meeting.<\/p>\n

\u201cI get along with him very well,\u201d Trump told reporters during a White House construction tour. \u201cI expected to meet with him later this year. Yeah, I will be.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump offered no date or location for a potential meeting and declined to say whether he and Kim had recently exchanged letters.<\/p>\n

North Korea, however, pushed back on the prospect while acknowledging that the personal relationship between the two leaders remains intact.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe relationship between the two leaders remains excellent,\u201d Kim\u2019s sister, Kim Yo Jong, said in a statement carried by state media. \u201cHowever, the U.S.\u2019s hostile policies toward the Democratic People\u2019s Republic of Korea haven\u2019t changed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump has long argued that his personal relationship with Kim gives Washington an advantage in dealing with the nuclear-armed communist regime.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a very powerful player,\u201d Trump said, describing their ability to maintain a relationship as \u201ca good thing, not a bad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump became the first sitting American president to enter North Korea when he met Kim at the Demilitarized Zone in 2019. The two leaders also held summits in Singapore in 2018 and Vietnam in 2019 as Trump sought an agreement to curb Pyongyang\u2019s nuclear program.<\/p>\n

The diplomatic outreach represented a dramatic shift from the threats exchanged between Trump and Kim earlier in Trump\u2019s first term. Negotiations ultimately stalled without securing North Korea\u2019s denuclearization.<\/p>\n

Trump acknowledged Wednesday that Pyongyang now possesses a substantial nuclear arsenal.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has 57 very powerful nuclear weapons,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey should have never allowed it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Independent estimates vary. The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute estimated in June that North Korea may have assembled about 60 nuclear warheads and possesses enough fissile material for at least 30 more.<\/p>\n

Trump nevertheless expressed confidence that his approach could keep tensions under control.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know Kim Jong Un very well, and he\u2019s going to be fine as long as we have a smart president,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n
