{"id":1697,"date":"2026-08-26T15:12:56","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T15:12:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=1697"},"modified":"2026-08-26T15:12:56","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T15:12:56","slug":"elementary-school-named-after-obama-closes-indefinitely-due-to-rats-mold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=1697","title":{"rendered":"Elementary School Named After Obama Closes Indefinitely Due to Rats, Mold"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Barack Obama Elementary School in Richmond, Virginia, has been closed indefinitely due to health concerns after workers discovered noticeable levels of mold in the basement and classrooms.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=1695\">Fears Grow Over Coerced Islamic Conversions in Prisons<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Daily Caller reports that Richmond Public Schools (RPS) Chief Operations Officer Patrick Herrel directed people to exit the building on Monday and said that the\u00a0school would be shutting its doors.<\/p>\n<p>Multiple individuals inside the school at the time, including some parents, confirmed to WRIC ABC News 8 that they noticed mold in the building, such as on laptops that had been kept in storage there during the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Richmond City School Board member Ali Faruk\u00a0told CBS 6 that a broken heating and cooling system (HVAC) and a leaking pipe caused moisture to build up over the summer.<\/p>\n<p>Faruk explained, \u201cIt was a wetter summer than we usually have, a hotter summer than we usually have, and an HVAC system that wasn\u2019t working properly. So, sadly, all those came together to create the perfect awful soup for the looming \u2026 mold in a building that already had a proclivity to mold.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This elementary school had been open since 1922.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, it changed its name from J.E.B. Thies (@BreccanFThies) August 24, 2026<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\nIn a statement released Monday, RPS Superintendent Jason Kamras said that the school\u2019s teachers and staff had \u201cfound additional areas of mold growth\u201d in some areas of the building, such as \u201cbehind bulletin board paper.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kamras added, \u201cOut of an abundance of caution, we decided to send everyone home so we could thoroughly re-clean the newly identified areas and perform additional antimicrobial fogging.
