Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro (D.) is being accused of \u201cfearmongering\u201d and engaging in \u201cdeliberate deception\u201d after announcing on Tuesday that two \u201cunvaccinated\u201d residents in Lancaster County had died from the measles, using the term \u201cmeasles-associated\u201d to suggest the deaths were caused by the disease.<\/p>\n

The announcement came as Democrats were hyping an outbreak of 393 confirmed cases of measles across 28 counties and blaming it on Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/p>\n

The two alleged \u201cmeasles associated\u201d deaths in Pennsylvania would mark the state\u2019s first measles-related deaths in 35 years and the first in the United States in 2026.<\/p>\n

However, Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni stated on Wednesday that his office has no record of any measles deaths, though he is investigating one infant death involving a positive measles test. In that case, Diamantoni said the cause of the newborn\u2019s death was not from the measles, but a laceration of the spleen, although measles antibodies were present in postmortem testing.<\/p>\n

Shapiro\u2019s emphasis that both individuals were unvaccinated is one of the ways critics also say the governor was being deceptive as the newborn baby had died at birth before he\/she could be vaccinated.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, there is no information on the second case as Pennsylvania health authorities have refused to release it, but according to county officials,\u00a0 deaths from infectious diseases like measles are required to be reported to the coroner.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Wednesday, Sec. Kennedy accused Shapiro of announcing the \u201cfabricated\u201d deaths with \u201cgiddy delight.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe performance was a replay of the Democrats\u2019 COVID playbook: fearmongering, misinformation, finger-pointing, and the weaponization of infectious disease fears for political gain,\u201d Kennedy posted on X. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe announcement appears to have been premature, and the deaths may even have been altogether fabricated by one of the Governor\u2019s hopeful staffers. The Lancaster County Coroner says that it has no record of any measles deaths,\u201d he added. \u201cState law requires that all measles deaths be reported to the coroner.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Shapiro revived the Democrats\u2019 worn out talking points from the COVID era and accused Kennedy of spreading \u201cconspiracy theories\u201d and \u201cmisinformation\u201d about vaccines.<\/p>\n

State officials have declined to release details on the victims\u2019 ages or backgrounds, citing privacy. Republicans and local officials like Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons are pressing for clarification on whether the individuals died from<\/em> measles or with<\/em> measles.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have sought to keep an open mind and be objective, but the evidence now leads to the conclusion that there is deception happening here,\u201d said Parsons on Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a matter of great public importance,\u201d Parsons posted on X.\u00a0 \u201cWe have a right to know the facts on this. You cannot drop a bombshell like this and then essentially say all the information around it is top secret. The only way for government to have trust with citizens is through transparency and honesty. That is especially important since what happened during COVID.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his lengthy post, Parsons, a former prosecutor, laid out the facts as if he were trying a criminal case in court:<\/p>\n

\n

1. The press conference<\/strong>: Officials at the Governor\u2019s press conference used the term \u201cmeasles-associated\u201d (see press conference and accompanying press release) but clearly framed it as deaths FROM measles. The Governor stated that these are the first two measles-associated deaths in the U.S. in 35 years. People died FROM measles 35 years ago. Therefore, it would not be accurate to make that statement unless these current cases were in fact being presented as deaths attributable to measles in some significant way. This appears to be a carefully crafted attempt to overstate the case, while also maintaining some later wiggle room, i.e. \u201cassociated\u201d to muddy the issue if it became clear these were not in fact measles deaths. This indicates deception.<\/p>\n

2. The desired media response:<\/strong> The media, in large part, dutifully took their cue and reported two deaths \u201cfrom\u201d measles in Lancaster County. The New York Times: \u201cTwo unvaccinated people in Pennsylvania have died from measles, as a large outbreak there continues to spread, the state\u2019s Health Department reported on Tuesday morning.\u201d ABC News: \u201cBREAKING: Two people have died in Pennsylvania from measles, the state health department said Tuesday. Both unvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Parsons said it was important to note that the governor, his administration, and other Democrat officials at the press conference did not correct the stories, nor did the media.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is clear now that these stories are not true and any credible news source would retract them rather than just shrug and move on,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n

\n

3. The lack of transparency:<\/strong> Officials provided virtually no background information about these \u201cmeasles-associated\u201d deaths. DOH said to \u201cprotect the privacy of the individuals and their families, DOH will not release any additional details that could personally identify these individuals and their families,\u201d however, they did release the medical information other than the fact that the two were \u201cunvaccinated.\u201d<\/p>\n

Parsons noted that the law does allow certain information to be released that does not violate privacy, such as \u201cdemographic and background information,\u201d and it was very important to do this since the announcement made national news.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cOfficials provided no corroborating evidence to their claims,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

\n

4. The story unravels:<\/strong> I then conducted an investigation and learned from the Lancaster County Coroner that there were zero reported measles deaths in Lancaster County.\u00a0 I announced this publicly to be transparent. Neither the Governor\u2019s Office nor Penn Medicine replied to my questions. The law requires deaths from contagious disease such as measles to be reported to the Coroner.<\/p>\n

The Coroner then released information that an infant had died during a home birth and the infant tested positive for measles but did not die of measles.<\/p>\n

5. State officials then point to deceased infant:<\/strong> State officials, who previously refused to give any information on the two deceased individuals (other then they were unvaccinated) then pointed to the infant as one of the cases.\u00a0 PA Secretary of Health Dr. Debra Bogen released a statement on 8\/26\/27 stating that she \u201cthoroughly reviewed the case investigation information and sadly can confirm that the were two measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

6. County Coroner and Forensic Pathologist report contradicts state officials:<\/strong> The County Coroner and the Forensic Pathologist, both of whom have many years of experience, rule out the claim that the infant can be one of the cases. \u201cLancaster County Coroner Steve Diamantoni said the cause of death was not from the measles. The newborn died shortly after birth from a laceration of the spleen, although measles antibodies were present in postmortem testing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreover, the forensic pathologist who conducted the autopsy indicated the cause of death was not related to measles, thus ruling out the theory that has been raised by some that the spleen was enlarged or otherwise susceptible to this injury due to measles exposure.<\/p>\n

7. The death investigation:<\/strong> Importantly, the County Coroner is THE person who has statutory authority to rule on cause and manner of death in Pennsylvania. The Coroner said \u201cstate officials had not contacted him personally as of Wednesday about the two Lancaster County measles-associated deaths.\u201d\u00a0 Because this was a home birth where the infant died, and because the County Coroner and the forensic pathologist were the ones investigating this case and came to the conclusion it was not measles related\u2014 what evidence did the PA Secretary of Health \u201cthoroughly\u201d review?<\/p>\n

There would be no hospital records in this case. The Coroner investigation WAS the investigation. But they never personally consulted the Coroner. So what other evidence is she using to determine this death was \u201cmeasles-associated\u201d to such a degree that they could report to the world that this was one of two measles deaths in Lancaster County?<\/p>\n

8. Deception:<\/strong> Also important is the fact that officials emphasized in the press conference that the two individuals were \u201cunvaccinated.\u201d Now, technically that would be true for a baby who was born at home and immediately died. But there would be no possible way for the baby to vaccinated. The framing of this, or underlying assertion in it, seemed to be to indicate that the deceased person was unvaccinated by choice. This shows intent on the part of officials to deceive. Announcing a technically true statement, but keeping secret the context which would show there was no possible way for the baby to have been vaccinated before its death is deliberately deceptive.<\/p>\n

In the law, when trying cases in court, there is a jury instruction called \u201cfalse in one, false in all.\u201d It is the from the Latin term \u201cfalsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.\u201d It means that if you find a witness lied about a material fact, the jury may choose to reject the rest of the witness\u2019s testimony. That seems appropriate here.<\/p>\n

9. Deception:<\/strong> Similarly deceptive is the following \u2013 after my investigation revealed that the County Coroner has zero deaths from measles, PA DOH said: \u201cNot all deaths are referred to a coroner under Pennsylvania law.\u201d (DOH Statement on 8\/26\/26.) This is technically correct. For instance, an elderly patient who dies of natural causes would not necessarily be referred to the County Coroner. However, the law does require a death known or suspected to be due to contagious disease be reported to the coroner. Thus, the coroner should have a record of any measles death in Lancaster County.<\/p>\n

Again, this is an apparent deliberate deception. Falsus in uno, falsus in omnibus.<\/p>\n

10. The second case:<\/strong> We still know nothing about the second reported death. There has not even been an effort, to my knowledge, to explain this death or provide any details whatsoever \u2013 beyond \u201cunvaccinated.\u201d Again, under the law any death due to measles would be required to be reported to the County Coroner. He has no report.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cGiven the other apparent deception here it is fair to ask whether the facts of the second case have been materially manipulated similar to the first case, or whether the second case exists at all,\u201d Parsons said.<\/p>\n

In his statement, Kennedy said\u00a0Shapiro had \u201cshattered tradition and violated standard public health policy by refusing to share information with the County Health Department or CDC.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n

Since I have been in office, CDC has had a superb record of cooperation, information sharing, and professionalism with blue- and red-state governors and health officials. Those collaborations have resulted in effective control of the global measles outbreak in this country.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cGovernor Shapiro got his headlines,\u201d Kennedy concluded. \u201cHe correctly gambled that the slavish mainstream media would dutifully amplify his scolding without any effort to check his facts.\u201d<\/p>\n
