Nvidia\u2019s market value touched roughly $5.25 trillion this month, the largest of any company on Earth. Ask most people how long that took, and they will guess five years, maybe 10: overnight unicorns, a viral launch, a founder in a hoodie. The real number is 32. Jensen Huang cofounded Nvidia over coffee at a Denny\u2019s in San Jose in 1993, and the company spent two decades as a chip maker that nearly went under more than once, long before AI made its work suddenly, staggeringly valuable.<\/p>\n

Huang\u2019s patience did not start in a boardroom. At nine, he was shipped from Taiwan to an uncle in Tacoma, then mistakenly enrolled at the Oneida Baptist Institute, a reform school in rural Kentucky, where he cleaned dormitory toilets and took his lumps as the only Asian kid on campus. He bussed tables at Denny\u2019s as a teenager, years before he designed a chip. Nobody handed him a term sheet. He earned one, decades on.<\/p>\n

Alex Karp is a stranger case for patience, since his politics do not sit neatly on the right. He grew up outside Philadelphia in a household he has described as radical, marching at labor protests and anti-Reagan demonstrations as a kid, the son of a civil-rights-minded pediatrician and an artist mother. He studied philosophy at Haverford, took a law degree at Stanford, and then a Ph.D. in social theory in Frankfurt before cofounding Palantir in 2003. Seventeen years passed before it went public, and another five before it became the defense-technology household name it is now, worth north of $400 billion. Whatever Karp\u2019s politics, he built his company on the same clock as everyone here: heads down, grinding decade after decade, betting the enterprise would outweigh the years he poured into it.<\/p>\n

Palantir\u2019s early years were no faster. The company took its first $2 million investment from In-Q-Tel, the CIA\u2019s venture arm, in 2004 and spent most of the next decade as a secretive government contractor few had heard of, trying to build a business that could turn a profit. Karp did not take it public until 2020, and Palantir did not post its first-ever profitable quarter until 19 years after founding, with its first full profitable year in 2023. Patience meant absorbing nearly two decades of losses before the market agreed that the bet had paid off.<\/p>\n

Then there is Elon Musk, either the most disciplined man in business or its most theatrical. During Tesla\u2019s self-described \u201cproduction hell\u201d in 2017 and 2018, when the Model 3 line kept missing every deadline Musk had announced, he slept on the Fremont factory floor, on a couch, and once on the bare concrete because the couch was too narrow. A CEO who vacations while workers grind overtime forfeits the right to ask for it, he told CBS. Tesla did not turn durably profitable or join the S&P 500 until 2020, 17 years after Musk joined as an investor and took control.<\/p>\n

A South African-born engineer who slept on a factory floor in his forties rather than ask workers to endure what he would not. They share neither\u00a0politics nor backgrounds. What they share is patience and a country that, until recently, let them keep what patience built.<\/p>\n

Nvidia, Tesla, and Palantir together employ roughly 181,000 people directly, and their combined market value now runs north of $7 trillion. That is not luck. That is decades of at-risk capital and founders who did not cash out the moment the stock ticked up, because for years there was nothing to cash out.<\/p>\n

None of this is abstract. Nvidia\u2019s chips run the AI models that compress drug-discovery timelines that used to take a decade into months, predicting a protein\u2019s shape in minutes instead of years of lab work. That horsepower reaches genomics directly: a Stanford, Nvidia, Google, and Oxford Nanopore team set a Guinness World Record for the fastest DNA sequencing technique, five hours and two minutes, diagnosing a genetic disease in critically ill patients in what used to take days, and helped Insilico Medicine push rentosertib into Phase 2 trials, the first drug ever discovered and designed end to end by generative AI, for a fatal lung disease with no cure. Palantir\u2019s software became the backbone of Operation Warp Speed, getting a COVID vaccine into American arms in under a year, the fastest rollout in history. Tesla\u2019s Autopilot prompted a federal investigation in which NHTSA found Tesla crash rates fell nearly 40% after the feature\u2019s introduction, and its push into batteries helped drive EV battery pack costs down roughly 90% between 2008 and 2023, per the Department of Energy, pulling the auto industry toward electrification faster than any subsidy alone could. You need not like these men or share their politics to see that patient capital handed civilization faster cures, faster diagnoses, a faster vaccine, safer roads, and cheaper clean cars.<\/p>\n

To be fair, the asymmetry here is real. A schoolteacher pays income tax on every paycheck, while a founder\u2019s stock can appreciate for decades without triggering a dollar of tax until the shares are sold. At least they get summers off. Senator Ron Wyden\u2019s Billionaires Income Tax, reintroduced last September with more than 20 cosponsors, would apply a mark-to-market regime to the tradable stock of anyone worth a billion dollars or earning $100 million a year for three years, taxing the annual paper gain as if the shares had changed hands. Backers say it would raise roughly half a trillion dollars over a decade. Wyden, Whitehouse, and King followed in April with a companion bill ending the carried-interest structure my own industry has relied on for generations. It would convert a\u00a0general partner\u2019s profit share into ordinary income, whether or not the fund has distributed a dime.<\/p>\n

I have sat across the table from limited partners deciding whether to commit to a 10-year private credit fund instead of a liquid bond ladder, and the pitch works only because the tax code has rewarded long-term investments. Tax a general partner\u2019s carry as phantom income, and he gains a reason to favor shorter, more liquid deals over the patient lending structures that take years to mature. The capital does not disappear. It stops funding the slow, decade-long bets these companies needed in their worst years and chases whatever can be flipped before the next tax bill comes due.<\/p>\n

You do not build a 32-year company, or a 17-year one, by cashing out in year six because Congress sent a bill on money you have not touched. Reagan said the nine most terrifying words in English were \u201cI\u2019m from the government, and I\u2019m here to help.\u201d Wyden\u2019s bills are a modern variation: I\u2019m from the government, here to mark your patience to market. A tax code that punishes waiting gets less patience and far fewer Nvidias in return. Congress should let founders finish what they started before it sends the bill.<\/p>\n
