The Trump administration is negotiating with Venezuela\u2019s interim government for a U.S. ownership stake in some of the country\u2019s massive oil reserves, a potential agreement that could dramatically expand American energy holdings and strengthen U.S. influence in the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n

The discussions involve more than a dozen producing oil fields containing an estimated 90 billion barrels of proven reserves, according to Axios, which cited two U.S. officials familiar with the negotiations. Venezuela has about 300 billion barrels of proven reserves, the largest of any country.<\/p>\n

\u201cCalling this deal huge would be an understatement,\u201d one official said. \u201cIt is massive.\u201d<\/p>\n

Under the proposal, Venezuela would grant the United States an ownership interest in the fields while private companies, including American energy firms, would help rehabilitate and develop the country\u2019s deteriorated oil infrastructure. Venezuelans would receive increased revenue from expanded production.<\/p>\n

The negotiations come as wars involving Iran and Ukraine have disrupted global energy markets and contributed to higher oil prices. The U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve has also fallen to its lowest level in roughly four decades.<\/p>\n

Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Venezuelan acting President Delcy Rodriguez have led the negotiations. State and Defense department officials met with Venezuelan counterparts in Caracas last month, while Deputy White House Chief of Staff Stephen Miller has also played a significant role.<\/p>\n

The potential agreement follows the Jan. 3 capture of Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro, who is facing narco-terrorism charges in New York. Trump had reportedly begun exploring a U.S. stake in Venezuelan oil resources even before Maduro\u2019s removal.<\/p>\n

Venezuela\u2019s once-powerful petroleum industry deteriorated under decades of socialist rule by Maduro and his predecessor, Hugo Chavez, leaving substantial reserves underdeveloped despite the country\u2019s extraordinary energy wealth.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Trump is close to securing America\u2019s energy future for generations to come, not just in the U.S. but in the hemisphere,\u201d a second U.S. official said.<\/p>\n

Energy Secretary Chris Wright is considering traveling to Venezuela next week as officials explore ways for U.S. companies to increase production.<\/p>\n
