Somehow it feels like we have been here before. In 1995, Americans were stunned that one of their national heroes had allegedly carved up his wife and a young man named Ron Goldman. They sat in silence, waiting for the verdict. To the open delight of most black Americans and the stunned silence of most white ones, O.J. Simpson\u2014despite a mountain of physical evidence\u2014was acquitted. I do not believe the majority of those celebrating thought he was innocent. The verdict was never about Nicole Brown or Ron Goldman. It was about decades of grievance, real and imagined, and the pure, unfiltered pleasure of watching the system get beaten by one of their own. The two dead people were treated as collateral damage. Acceptable losses in the larger war.<\/p>\n

Just a few years earlier, Rodney King had been beaten by LA cops after a chase. The officers were acquitted, and the city burned. During the Simpson trial, Mark Fuhrman was caught lying under oath about his use of racial slurs, handing the defense a gift they never should have received. The prosecution was inept, the evidence was mishandled, and a high-priced defense team drove a truck through the holes. Johnnie Cochran took a case that should have been lost and turned it into a folk-hero performance for a large part of black America.<\/p>\n

I was standing in a mixed-race office when the verdict came down. The white faces were stunned and sick. The black faces could barely hide the satisfaction. Some of the looks said, without words, \u201cHow do you like it now?\u201d That moment, more than any single event in the decades that followed, poured acid into race relations in this country. The polarizing presidency of Barack Obama and the open racial contempt of his wife only poured more. The Simpson verdict did not heal anything. It taught a generation that historical grievance could be used as a get-out-of-jail-free card for double murder.<\/p>\n

Simpson\u2019s behavior throughout was that of a guilty man. He fled in the Bronco. The evidence of domestic abuse that later surfaced was waved away because he was famous and black. Ron Goldman was not her lover; he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. And then came the grotesque spectacle of Simpson himself, practically dripping blood, announcing he would find the \u201creal killer.\u201d It was nauseating. The celebration that followed sent a clear message: our guy beat the system\u2014what are you going to do about it? From that day forward, racial grievance became the all-purpose excuse for treating certain criminals as political symbols rather than predators. Soft-on-crime prosecutors, revolving-door bail, academic theories that \u201cthere is no such thing as a criminal,\u201d and the steady refusal to hold certain defendants to the same standard have all flowed from the same poisoned well. Fuck the victims. Fuck the evidence. Fuck everyone. The narrative comes first.<\/p>\n

We have watched the same logic used to discriminate against Asian Americans and to rewrite the history of European ethnic groups who were once openly despised. Italians and Greeks who were refused service a hundred years ago somehow became \u201cwhite\u201d and therefore legitimate targets of collective guilt, while other groups were redefined as permanent victims. The historical illiteracy required to sustain this is staggering, and it is being taught by people with Ph.D.s at universities charging half a million dollars for the privilege of being lied to.<\/p>\n

The Simpson trial is long over. The damage is not. The short-term glee of that verdict produced long-term harm for the very communities that celebrated it. It handed every bigot a ready-made talking point and made genuine integration harder, not easier. It was a self-inflicted wound dressed up as justice.<\/p>\n

And now we are watching the same play run with different actors. Three children strangled by their mother are being treated as collateral damage in the larger project of shielding women from full accountability. Legally, women already have equal rights. What is on trial is whether they will be allowed to keep those rights while claiming exemption from the ordinary consequences of citizenship. The psychological excuses for murder were garbage the day Clarence Darrow used them to spare Leopold and Loeb the death penalty. Two calculating young psychopaths murdered a 14-year-old boy for the thrill of it and were saved because a clever lawyer convinced a soft jury that society, not the killers, was ultimately to blame. Progressive opinion congratulated itself on its sophistication. Ordinary people would have pulled the switch without hesitation.<\/p>\n

From that precedent we moved on to irresistible impulse, temporary insanity, and every other doctrine that lets experts explain away capital crimes. \u201cSociety is to blame\u201d remains the preferred refrain\u2014an idea that traces, in part, to Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the same man who dumped all five of his own children at a foundling hospital and then wrote treatises on education and the natural goodness of man. The experts still cite him. The children still end up dead.<\/p>\n

I do not expect Lindsay Clancy to face the full weight of what she did. The jury of nine women and three men is still deliberating as of this writing. From some of the requests by the jury, the potential outcome is terrifying. And, after all, this is Massachusetts, where they celebrate infanticide. A guilty verdict would be a miracle.<\/p>\n

The defense is postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder. The prosecution says she planned it, timed it, and carried it out while her husband was deliberately sent out of the house. If the jury effectively excuses her, the signal will be clear: certain categories of people\u00a0can kill and still be treated as victims of their own biology or history.<\/em>\u00a0And you are kidding yourselves if you believe that the effect will stay confined to one courtroom. It will feed the manosphere for decades. It will\u00a0strengthen<\/em>\u00a0the voices already arguing that women cannot be trusted with the full responsibilities of citizenship. It will make the fringe discussion of repealing the Nineteenth Amendment\u00a0less fringe<\/em>. Female podcasters and pastors are already saying out loud that many women cannot be trusted to vote independently of the latest progressive fashion. Some intelligent women are stating that they would give up their own vote to keep feminist maniacs out of the voting booth. In the meantime, feminists argue that hormones or perceived past injustice can justify almost anything.<\/p>\n

Pick a lane, ladies. If hormones or postpartum conditions can turn murder into a medical event rather than a moral one, then it\u2019s open season. It becomes rational to question whether women should hold positions of real power, operate heavy machinery, drive a car, sit near the nuclear codes, or even be left alone with children. Aristotle\u2019s ancient claim that women were imperfect versions of men starts to look less like bigotry and more like a grim practical observation. If that is the path chosen, the old exclusions will return in new forms\u2014not because men hate women, but because men will eventually refuse to pretend that equal rights come without equal accountability. <\/em>It just doesn\u2019t work that way. Voting rights were originally denied to women on the basis that women did not serve in the military. How can women justify equal rights when they are not even accountable for wrongful actions\u2014even capital crimes\u2014because of their hormones?<\/p>\n

The women of America need to put feminism and its whole pathetic narrative on trial here, not just Lindsay Clancy. If she walks or is institutionalized as a victim rather than a killer, the backlash will not be polite. The manosphere will grow. The calls to restrict female political power will get louder. The best outcome for women who actually want to be treated as full citizens is for this jury to ignore a century and a half of addle-headed excuse-making and lock this murderer away permanently. And it is\u00a0all women <\/em>who should be leading that demand. I do still believe in women\u2019s ability to be full citizens and step up and take full responsibility for their actions. I am the father of a brilliant daughter and husband to a brilliant wife and mother. But this way\u2014this desire to have all the benefits of citizenship without taking on the accountability that comes with it\u2014is not the way forward.<\/p>\n
