Five people were killed and five others injured Sunday after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport, struck several vehicles and caught fire, authorities said.<\/p>\n

Prime Air Flight 7598, a Boeing 767-300 operated by North Carolina-based cargo carrier 21 Air, overran the runway shortly before 2 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. The aircraft had departed from Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n

\nMiami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz confirmed five deaths. Five additional people were hospitalized, including three in critical condition and two with less severe injuries.<\/p>\n

Authorities have not publicly identified those killed or injured.<\/p>\n

Video from the scene showed flames and heavy smoke after the aircraft left the runway. The plane ultimately came to rest near a roadway after striking multiple vehicles.<\/p>\n

The Boeing 767 was largely intact but suffered fire damage. More than 60 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units and approximately 200 personnel responded to the crash, according to Reuters. Emergency crews also dealt with leaking fuel.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old aircraft was originally built as a passenger jet before being converted into a freighter in 2015, according to flight-tracking service Flightradar24. The aircraft was still traveling at 112 knots, or about 129 mph, when it left the runway.<\/p>\n

The crash temporarily halted operations at the airport, leading to hundreds of flight disruptions before some runways reopened Sunday evening.<\/p>\n

Amazon expressed condolences to the victims and their families and said it was cooperating with authorities.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re heartbroken to learn that five people lost their lives in today\u2019s incident at Miami International Airport,\u201d the company said.<\/p>\n

21 Air CEO Keith Winters said the company was \u201cdevastated\u201d and was cooperating with federal investigators.<\/p>\n

The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating. The NTSB has dispatched a team to Miami to determine what caused the aircraft to overrun the runway.<\/p>\n
