Americans\u2019 dissatisfaction with the quality of K-12 education in the U.S. has dropped to 32 percent, a new low in Gallup\u2019s 27-year trend and down 11 percentage points over the past two years.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press reports an August poll published Tuesday by Gallup and the Walton Family Foundation, shows that during that same two years, public dissatisfaction has increased to a high of 67 percent.<\/p>\n

According to Gallup News, the trend appears to be driven by a growing political divide and concerns that schools are not preparing children for\u00a0college<\/span> and future jobs.<\/p>\n

\nGallup reports that while overall public perception is bleak, 66 percent of K-12 parents are satisfied with their own child\u2019s education. Even so, that number is a record low, down from it\u2019s peak at 83 percent in 1999..<\/p>\n

The poll shows clear political divergence with both Democrats and Independents are driving the recent drops.<\/p>\n

Satisfaction among Democrats fell by 19 points since 2024 to a low of 35 percent. Independent satisfaction dropped to 32 percent , while Republican satisfaction sits at 25 percent, according to Gallup.<\/p>\n

Gallup polling shows public confidence in schools generally has declined since the COVID-19 pandemic closed classrooms, exacerbating\u00a0academic declines<\/span>, mental health issues and other problems, according to the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

The web survey asked Americans to rate how well K-12 schools are preparing students for college and the world of work, as well as four specific skills such as preparing students to adapt to new technologies, effectively use artificial intelligence, work effectively with others, and think critically and solve problems, according to Gallup.<\/p>\n

When asked about specific skill areas, Americans rate K-12 schools worst on teaching critical thinking and problem-solving skills, according to U.S. News & World Report.<\/p>\n

The Associated Press reports Gallup senior education researcher Zach Hrynowski says the findings highlight a frustration with institutions more broadly.<\/p>\n

Hrynowski said, \u201cPeople have a general negative vibe about everything in the country right now. People are frustrated, and don\u2019t think any institution is working particularly well.\u201d<\/p>\n
