Arlington County, Virginia, has approved $50,000 in taxpayer funding to provide emergency assistance to families whose primary wage earner has been detained by federal immigration authorities, drawing criticism over the county\u2019s response to the Trump administration\u2019s immigration crackdown.<\/p>\n

The Arlington County Board approved the funding 4-0, with one member absent, following a surge in Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests across the Washington region. The money will be distributed through Arlington Thrive, a nonprofit that provides emergency financial assistance.<\/p>\n

Families can receive up to $2,000 over the next 10 months for expenses including housing, food and utilities. Assistance can be distributed through checks or debit cards, with alternative arrangements available for families without bank accounts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are valuing the families of those that have been displaced and removed,\u201d County Board Chairman Matt de Ferranti said.<\/p>\n

Former acting ICE Director Jonathan Fahey questioned whether the program could run afoul of federal immigration law if money is provided to people who are knowingly in the country illegally.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy giving money to people \u2026 the reasonable inference is that these people are also illegal, the money enables them to stay in the country illegally, because they lost their breadwinner,\u201d Fahey told Fox News Digital.<\/p>\n

Federal law prohibits certain conduct intended to encourage or induce unlawful immigration, although whether Arlington\u2019s assistance program would meet the legal requirements for a violation has not been established. The Supreme Court has interpreted the relevant provision of federal immigration law as incorporating an intent requirement.<\/p>\n

The Department of Homeland Security also criticized the county\u2019s decision, accusing local officials of using taxpayer money to benefit illegal immigrants.<\/p>\n

The funding follows an ICE operation that resulted in roughly 1,300 arrests across the Washington area during two weeks in August. It remains unclear how many occurred in Arlington.<\/p>\n

Arlington has separately awarded funding to nonprofits providing emergency financial assistance and services for families affected by detention or deportation. County records show its fiscal 2027 grant program includes assistance aimed at addressing those circumstances.<\/p>\n
