President Donald Trump abruptly ended an interview with NBC News anchor Kristen Welker after a contentious exchange over California\u2019s gubernatorial primary election and the president\u2019s claims about election integrity.<\/p>\n

The interview, recorded in Wisconsin and aired Sunday on NBC\u2019s \u201cMeet the Press,\u201d grew increasingly heated as Trump criticized California\u2019s vote-counting process and accused major media outlets of dismissing concerns about election administration.<\/p>\n

The dispute began when Trump pointed to the pace of vote counting in California\u2019s gubernatorial primary.<\/p>\n

Former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra advanced to the November general election Thursday, according to Decision Desk HQ. With 73% of the vote counted as of Sunday, Becerra held a lead of less than one percentage point over Republican Steve Hilton.<\/p>\n

Hilton maintained a lead of more than 4.7 percentage points over Democrat Tom Steyer, though Decision Desk HQ had not yet called the race for the second candidate expected to advance.<\/p>\n

Trump argued that the slow tabulation process was evidence that something was wrong with the election.<\/p>\n

The president noted that four days had passed since the election and said officials were still not close to finalizing the outcome.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know why they\u2019re doing that? Because they\u2019re cheating on the election,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

When Welker asked whether he had evidence that the election was rigged, Trump replied, \u201cAll I have to do is look.\u201d<\/p>\n

He then questioned whether it was appropriate for election officials to take several days to determine a winner.<\/p>\n

As the exchange continued, Trump broadened his criticism to include California election officials and the national media.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re crooked, just like you\u2019re crooked, your press is crooked. And \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 is crooked,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Welker responded, \u201cTo be fair. I\u2019m not crooked,\u201d while attempting to move the interview to another topic.<\/p>\n

Trump pushed back, saying, \u201cYou\u2019re either crooked or you\u2019re stupid.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou play right into their hands with this crap. You know that these elections are rigged. Your network knows that they\u2019re rigged,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The confrontation continued as Welker shifted to questions about acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.<\/p>\n

Trump responded by criticizing the nation\u2019s election system and accusing major media organizations of shielding election officials from scrutiny.<\/p>\n

\u201cYour elections are crooked, and you\u2019re crooked, and \u2018Meet the Press\u2019 is crooked,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd so is ABC and CBS and CNN.\u201d<\/p>\n

The president also described NBC News as a \u201cone-sided crooked network.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moments later, Trump brought the interview to an end.<\/p>\n

\u201cSorry. Let\u2019s call it quits because I\u2019ve had enough. Thank you, darling. Have a good time,\u201d he said before removing his microphone and throwing it to the ground.<\/p>\n

After Welker objected that she had traveled to Wisconsin for the interview, Trump replied that he had already given her sufficient time.<\/p>\n

\u201cA country can never be great with a dishonest press,\u201d the president said before standing up and walking away.<\/p>\n
