{"id":415,"date":"2026-06-12T08:37:27","date_gmt":"2026-06-12T08:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=415"},"modified":"2026-06-12T08:37:27","modified_gmt":"2026-06-12T08:37:27","slug":"doj-investigates-philadelphia-over-concealed-carry-permit-practices","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=415","title":{"rendered":"DOJ Investigates Philadelphia Over Concealed Carry Permit Practices"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>The Justice Department has launched an investigation into Philadelphia\u2019s handling of concealed carry permits, continuing the Trump administration\u2019s effort to expand federal protection of Second Amendment rights.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=413\">China\u2019s Industrial Policy: Ambition, Inefficiency, and a Cautionary Tale for America<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The inquiry was announced Tuesday by the Second Amendment Section of the Justice Department\u2019s Civil Rights Division, which said it is examining allegations involving the Philadelphia Police Department\u2019s issuance and revocation of licenses to carry firearms.<\/p>\n<p>Pennsylvania is a \u201cshall issue\u201d state, meaning authorities are generally required to issue concealed carry permits to applicants who meet statutory requirements.<\/p>\n<p>In a letter sent to Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon said the department would investigate whether the city\u2019s practices comply with state law and constitutional protections.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe investigation will evaluate the PPD\u2019s policies and practices regarding issuance and revocation of licenses to carry firearms and the PPD\u2019s enforcement of the Pennsylvania Uniform Firearms Act of 1995,\u201d Dhillon wrote.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Justice Department, the investigation is being conducted under the Police Pattern or Practice Act (PPD.)<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=411\">Movie Review: \u2018Obsession\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dhillon said federal officials will examine the department\u2019s actions under both the Second and Fourteenth Amendments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur investigation will focus on the lawful exercise of rights only; this investigation does not support or condone any armed criminal activity or criminal obstruction of federal or local law enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dhillon also criticized what she described as arbitrary permit revocations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe police can\u2019t revoke a concealed carry permit based on arbitrary decisions of licensing officials.
