Major League Baseball (MLB) is facing a major league backlash after it issued formal warnings to several Christian San Francisco Giants pitchers for inscribing bible verses on their caps during the team\u2019s \u201cPride Night\u201d game on June 13.<\/p>

Forced to wear rainbow-colored emblems on their caps to support the LGBTQ+ community, several of the team\u2019s pitchers rebelled during Friday\u2019s game.<\/p>\n

Right-handed pitcher Landen Roupp had Genesis 9:12-16 etched on his cap, which describes how God established the rainbow as a sign of his covenant with all living creatures following Noah\u2019s flood.<\/p>\n

Relief pitchers JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker also appeared in the game with Bible verses on their hats, according to Sport\u2019s Illustrated.<\/em><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, reliever Sam Hentges flat out refused to wear the Pride Night rainbow cap, reportedly\u00a0 \u201centering the game with the team\u2019s standard black and orange cap.\u201d<\/p>\n

When asked about his decision to write a Bible verse on his cap during\u00a0 his postgame media address, Roupp said: \u201cIt\u2019s just about God\u2019s covenant and a promise that he makes to us that, you know, his faithfulness and his mercy\u2026 That\u2019s just kind of something I believe in, and I stand firm in that, and I\u2019m thankful we live in a country where, you know, we have the freedom to believe what we want \u2026 and express what we want.\u201d<\/p>\n

MLB Chief Communications Officer Pat Courtney said the Christian verses violated uniform rules prohibiting messages on apparel.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice, we have warned the players about future violations,\u201d Courtney told The Athletic.<\/em><\/p>\n

The league later clarified that the warning was routine and not disciplinary.<\/p>\n

The Giants issued a statement about the situation on Saturday, saying:<\/p>\n

\u201cThe San Francisco Giants are proud to support Pride Night and the LGBTQ+ community. Baseball should be a place where everyone feels welcome, respected, and valued. We also respect that individuals may make personal choices about participating in team activations. We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that. Those choices do not change our organization\u2019s commitment to inclusion, belonging, and creating a welcoming environment for all. We remain grateful to our fans, partners, employees, players, and coaches who help make Pride Night a meaningful celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n

Multiple conservative figures and politicians have condemned the league\u2019s action, calling it discrimination against Christian faith.<\/p>\n

Actor Rob Schneider labeled MLB \u201canti-Christian\u201d on social media and pledged to pay fines for any Christian player penalized for wearing Bible verses on their uniform, a sentiment echoed by actor Kevin Sorbo.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo you can be forced to wear a uniform with a values statement you disagree with in MLB, but you aren\u2019t allowed to state your disagreement with the values?\u201d wrote Outkick founder Clay Travis on X. \u201cThe clear solution here is just wear normal uniforms and stop pride nights. It\u2019s counterproductive at this point.\u201d<\/p>

Vice President JD Vance commented on the controversy, stating, \u201cTrump won we don\u2019t have to do this anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senator Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) fired off a letter to Commissioner Rob Manfred demanding answers regarding an alleged pattern of discrimination against Christian players, citing MLB\u2019s antitrust exemptions.<\/p>\n
