On Monday, a Mexican national plead guilty to participating in what federal prosecutors described as a large-scale human smuggling operation that brought thousands of illegal immigrants into the United States, including people from the Middle East and other countries tied to national security concerns.<\/p>\n

Efrain Zuniga-Garcia, 38, admitted in federal court that he took part in a smuggling network that moved between 2,500 and 3,000 foreign nationals into the United States, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ).<\/p>\n

Federal officials said the network smuggled migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Yemen, India, Colombia, Guatemala, Honduras and Ecuador.<\/p>\n

According to the Justice Department, Zuniga-Garcia was involved in the scheme from November 2020 until September 2023, when he was first charged.<\/p>\n

The smuggling operation used stash houses in Monterrey and Piedras Negras, Mexico. Prosecutors said Zuniga-Garcia ran the Monterrey location, where he coordinated transportation and turned migrants over to smugglers who brought them across the Rio Grande into the United States.<\/p>\n

Zuniga-Garcia was charged in September 2023 with conspiracy to bring an alien into the United States and three counts of bringing an alien into the United States for financial benefit. He pleaded guilty and faces a mandatory minimum sentence of three years in prison.<\/p>\n

Several of Zuniga-Garcia\u2019s co-defendants have already been sentenced.<\/p>\n

Enil Edil Mejia-Zuniga, an illegal immigrant from Honduras who lived in San Antonio, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in July 2025 after being convicted of directing the operation. Another co-defendant, Monica Hernandez-Palma, also has been sentenced.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn an effort to satisfy his greed, Mejia-Zuniga facilitated the illegal movement of thousands of Middle Easterners into the United States,\u201d U.S. Attorney Justin Simmons for the Western District of Texas said at the time. \u201cHis actions put our national security at risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

The guilty plea comes amid concerns from lawmakers about border security and the number of illegal immigrants who entered the United States during former President Joe Biden\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n

, Border Patrol agents encountered roughly 400 people on the terror watchlist at the border from the start of fiscal year 2021 through the end of Biden\u2019s presidency. From 2017 to 2020, the committee said Border Patrol agents apprehended 14 people on the terror watchlist at the border.<\/p>\n

The committee also said at least 2 million known gotaways entered the country during that period.<\/p>\n
