President Donald Trump said Wednesday that the United States would halt trade with Spain, calling the country a \u201cterrible partner in NATO\u201d and accusing Madrid of refusing to meet the alliance\u2019s defense obligations.<\/p>\n

Trump made the remarks while meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte at the alliance\u2019s summit in Ankara, Turkey. The president turned to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and directed him to move immediately.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have to trade with them, I don\u2019t want to do any more trade with them\u2026 take it immediately, don\u2019t even talk to them. They\u2019re hopeless, bad people,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Bessent replied, \u201cYes sir,\u201d and Trump said he believed Spain would \u201ccome running back.\u201d<\/p>\n

The announcement came as Trump continued pressing European NATO members to increase defense spending and move beyond what he views as a post-Cold War model of heavy welfare spending and minimal military investment.<\/p>\n

Spain has resisted NATO\u2019s 5 percent of gross domestic product defense spending target, instead holding to the previous 2 percent benchmark. Trump also criticized Spain for refusing to assist the United States in the conflict with Iran.<\/p>\n

\u201cSpain is a terrible partner in NATO,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThey don\u2019t participate, they don\u2019t pay\u2026 they\u2019re open about it, they\u2019re hostile.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump also said Spain had treated Rutte \u201cterribly.\u201d<\/p>\n

It remains unclear what form a trade cutoff would take. Trump has previously threatened action against Spain over its approach to NATO.<\/p>\n

European officials pushed back quickly, arguing the United States cannot single out Spain for a trade embargo because Spain is part of the European Union\u2019s single market.<\/p>\n
