That danger is growing again with the Jones Act waiver.

Read more Trump’s Patience With the Iranian Regime Runs Out

When the administration first approved the waiver, the justification was straightforward. Conflict with Iran threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Energy markets reacted with predictable panic. Policymakers hoped giving refiners additional flexibility would help blunt price spikes.

But events this week have exposed a much larger problem.

Iran has once again targeted commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. The attacks prompted major American strikes against Iranian military infrastructure and led President Trump to declare the interim memorandum with Tehran effectively over.

That changes the debate entirely.

If every act of Iranian aggression automatically results in Washington suspending protections for America’s own maritime industry, then Iran has effectively gained the ability to influence American domestic economic policy. No foreign adversary should possess that kind of leverage. The Jones Act is not simply an economic regulation. It is part of America’s national security infrastructure.

The law supports an American shipbuilding base, a domestic merchant marine, skilled workers, repair facilities, and transportation networks that become indispensable during military conflicts and national emergencies. Those capabilities cannot simply be recreated after years of neglect. Once they disappear, rebuilding them takes decades.

That is precisely why allowing foreign aggression to dictate domestic maritime policy is such a dangerous precedent. Ironically, the renewed attacks demonstrate exactly why America needs a strong domestic maritime industry—not why it should weaken one.

Supporters of extending the waiver continue arguing that extraordinary circumstances justify extraordinary measures. But the waiver itself has produced little evidence of meaningful relief for American consumers. Fuel prices remain overwhelmingly driven by global crude markets, refinery capacity, and geopolitical risk rather than the limited number of Jones Act-qualified vessels operating domestically. The promised savings have been marginal at best, while the costs to American maritime workers are very real.

In other words, Washington is sacrificing long-term strategic capacity for benefits that have been difficult to measure. That is a poor bargain. Republican leaders understand this. Speaker Mike Johnson, Majority Leader Steve Scalise, Congressman James Comer, and dozens of House Republicans have urged President Trump to end the Jones Act waiver when it expires in August, arguing that emergency relief should remain temporary rather than become a standing exception.

Their position reflects the same America First principles that helped build Trump’s political movement. Trump won support by arguing that America should rebuild industries that had been hollowed out by decades of bad policy. He championed domestic manufacturing. He fought to restore industrial jobs. He repeatedly warned against allowing foreign governments to gain leverage over critical American supply chains.

Read more Commie Mayor Mamdami Sparks Outrage After Excluding Little Italy, Little Ireland, From Map of NYC Enclaves

Those arguments apply every bit as much to shipbuilding and maritime transportation as they do to steel mills or semiconductor plants. Transportation is national security. No one questions the importance of domestic oil production. No one argues America should abandon pipelines or rail infrastructure because maintaining them costs money. Maritime transportation deserves the same recognition.

Politically, the stakes are significant.

The states that rely heavily on Jones Act industries are hardly political afterthoughts. Texas, Ohio, Michigan, North Carolina, Georgia, Alaska, and Maine all have workers whose livelihoods depend on a healthy American maritime sector. These are precisely the kinds of blue-collar voters who formed the backbone of Trump’s coalition.

Weakening those industries for minimal economic benefit risks creating unnecessary political vulnerabilities heading into the midterms. More importantly, it sends the wrong message. Iran should never be able to conclude that threatening international shipping can pressure the United States into weakening its own strategic industries. That rewards exactly the kind of coercion America has spent decades trying to deter.

America should respond to foreign threats by strengthening domestic resilience, not by making itself more dependent on emergency exceptions.

The Jones Act waiver was introduced as a temporary response to an extraordinary situation. It should remain exactly that.

President Trump has consistently argued that America becomes stronger by rebuilding its industrial base rather than making short-term compromises that weaken long-term security. Ending the waiver on schedule would be entirely consistent with that vision.

The United States should never allow Tehran or any other foreign power to hold America’s shipbuilding industry hostage.

Read more Report: Southern California Education Leaders Stole Nearly $20M From Schools

Washington has a bad habit of allowing temporary emergency measures to become permanent policy.
