{"id":935,"date":"2026-07-10T10:08:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T10:08:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=935"},"modified":"2026-07-10T10:08:54","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T10:08:54","slug":"woke-smithsonian-chief-pushes-back-on-white-house-report-criticizing-museums-historical-narrative","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=935","title":{"rendered":"Woke Smithsonian Chief Pushes Back on White House Report Criticizing Museum\u2019s Historical Narrative"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch is pushing back against a White House report that sharply criticized the National Museum of American History, saying the assessment does not accurately reflect the institution\u2019s work or mission.<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=934\">Federal Appeals Court Strikes Down Texas In-State Tuition for Illegal Aliens<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In a letter to Smithsonian employees obtained by ABC News, Bunch said the institution\u2019s leadership is reviewing the findings of the White House report released July 4, but disputed its overall conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile there will always be room for improvement, this report is not a fair characterization of the work and totality of the National Museum of American History,\u201d Bunch wrote. \u201cAt the Smithsonian, our work is driven by scholarship, accuracy, and an uncompromising commitment to tell the fullness of America\u2019s story.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bunch has not publicly commented on the report.<\/p>\n<p>The White House\u2019s 162-page report accuses the Smithsonian Institution, and particularly the National Museum of American History, of promoting a \u201cradical view\u201d of American history through \u201cextreme political activism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, museum leadership has adopted \u201can ideological framework that no longer treats the American story as a shared national inheritance to be taught or celebrated, but as a political instrument to divide, dispirit, and discourage our citizens.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The report also accuses the museum of engaging in \u201canti-White activism,\u201d \u201cillegal alien activism,\u201d and \u201ctransgender activism,\u201d and includes photographs of exhibits and materials the administration identified as problematic.<\/p>\n<p>The review was launched in response to President Donald Trump\u2019s March 27, 2025, executive order, \u201cRestoring Truth and Sanity to American History.\u201d The order directed Vice President JD Vance, working with the president\u2019s domestic policy advisers, to remove what it called \u201cimproper ideology\u201d from Smithsonian institutions and argued that materials portraying America in a negative light do not belong in federally supported cultural institutions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe serious concerns raised in this report are not about a few exhibits or a few controversial labels,\u201d the report states. \u201cAs it stands today, it would benefit most Americans, especially parents bringing their children for a tour, if the Smithsonian\u2019s flagship history museum had a label at every entrance that reads: \u2018Warning: the exhibits in this museum were prepared by people who don\u2019t want you to love your country.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Read more <a href=\"https:\/\/urbaneconomynews.com\/?p=932\">Morning Greatness: Israel Warns US of New Iranian Plot to Assassinate Trump<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bunch defended the Smithsonian\u2019s mission in his message to employees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs public servants and the keepers of this institution, we are charged with helping a nation find understanding, hope, and clarity and as part of that duty, we are dedicated to excellence, reflection, and growth,\u201d he wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He also thanked staff members for their work and reaffirmed the institution\u2019s commitment to its mission.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery day, we are honored to tell America\u2019s stories and hold that responsibility with the utmost regard, respect, and fidelity.
