The notorious cyber hacking group ShinyHunters claims to have stolen two to three terabytes of data containing sensitive details of nearly all FBI agents and job applicants after hacking the agency’s job application website.

Breitbart reports that the hackers claim to have breached the FBI by exploiting Oracle’s Peoplesoft platform and allegedly defaced the bureau’s jobs website to prove it.
“We hacked the FBI. We hold data on all FBI employees and applicants,” a representative for the group told 404 Media on Tuesday.

Once detected, the agency reportedly terminated multiple networks simultaneously to mitigate the threat, according to CBS News.
Breitbart reports the defacement message was styled after a law enforcement seizure notice and read “this site has been seized by ShinyHunters” while claiming a far greater breach than the website alone.
ShinyHunters claimed:
All FBI data was compromised including PII/PHI [personally identifiable information and protected health information] on incumbent and former FBI employees and all applicant information. We have a lot more than we claim here.

The data allegedly includes detailed information affecting thousands of active FBI agents, former employees, and individuals who applied for employment through the portal, according to Reuters.
As proof of the intrusion, the hacking group provided 404 Media with a screenshot of a vandalized webpage and leaked a sample containing roughly 5,000 records of purported agents, including names, home addresses, phone numbers, dates of birth, and details about employees’ spouses.
Breitbart reports that reporters cross-checked phone numbers in the sample using the OSINT Industries tool and found they matched the same names listed in the file.
An FBI spokesperson responded to 404 Media after the article was first published, confirming the bureau was looking into the matter, saying, “The FBI is aware of claims regarding unauthorized activity affecting FBIjobs.gov and is currently investigating.”
The breach constitutes major public safety and counterintelligence risks with security experts interviewed by the The New York Times noting that exposing the home addresses and phone numbers of federal law enforcement officers leaves them vulnerable to intimidation, tracking, or violent retribution by criminal groups.
There are additional concerns that foreign intelligence agencies could weaponize the data to analyze how the nation’s premier law enforcement agency operates.
