“They will all go to jail for a long period of time!!!” Trump declared Friday on Truth Social, sharing a Department of Justice letter warning Los Angeles County officials of potential criminal consequences for allowing illegal votes to be counted.
The warning follows a federal lawsuit filed Thursday against California after the Justice Department provided election officials with citizenship data identifying approximately 20,000 registered voters flagged by the Department of Homeland Security as possible noncitizens.
Federal officials gave California 48 hours to compare the names against state voter records and requested that ballots associated with individuals whose citizenship could not be verified be set aside pending confirmation.
The administration maintains that knowingly allowing noncitizens to vote in federal elections violates federal law and could expose election officials to criminal prosecution.

The dispute comes amid concerns raised by Trump about election integrity, including his earlier allegation that California and three other states collectively had 250,000 noncitizens on their voter rolls. That figure remains disputed.
California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom rejected the administration’s lawsuit, accusing Trump of attempting to interfere with the election.
“This is a sad, desperate attempt by Trump to use his politicized Justice Department to try to suppress California voters just three weeks before Election Day,” Newsom said in a statement.
Meanwhile, the UCLA Voting Rights Project has challenged the administration’s citizenship data and threatened additional legal action.
Attorneys for the group argue that using the federal list to remove voters shortly before Election Day could violate the National Voter Registration Act.
