Violent unrest erupted across Belfast on Tuesday night after the arrest of a Sudanese migrant in connection with what authorities described as an attempted murder that shocked Northern Ireland.

Protests that began in response to Monday night’s behading attack devolved into widespread disorder, with rioters setting vehicles and homes ablaze, attacking police officers, and causing extensive damage across several neighborhoods.
The violence followed the circulation of graphic video footage showing a man repeatedly trying to behead another man in the neck during an attack in North Belfast.
Police announced Tuesday morning that they had arrested a Sudanese man in his 30s and charged him with attempted murder. According to authorities, the suspect had been granted leave-to-remain status by the UK Home Office in 2023 after traveling through Paris and Dublin before entering Northern Ireland via the open border with the Republic of Ireland.
As news of the arrest spread, demonstrations were organized across Belfast. According to local reports, some of those gatherings descended into chaos.
Multiple vehicles, including a city bus and a police vehicle, were set on fire. Authorities also reported incidents involving petrol bombs being thrown at police officers in the Cloughfern area. Elsewhere, residents were forced to evacuate homes after fires broke out during the disorder.

Many residents expressed outrage not only over the alleged attack but also over the circumstances that allowed the suspect to enter and remain in the country. Critics of Britain’s immigration policies have argued that weak border controls and generous asylum policies create risks for public safety.
Northern Ireland First Minister Michelle O’Neill condemned both the stabbing and the subsequent violence.
“The attack in North Belfast was heinous and wrong. But there are dangerous attempts to exploit that to target and attack innocent people who are simply trying to live, work and raise their families here,” O’Neill said.
She also denounced the attacks on homes and families.
“Groups of masked men burning families out of their homes is nothing less than disgusting cowardice,” O’Neill said.
“Racism, intimidation and violence are wrong wherever they occur. There can be no excuse and no justification for these attacks tonight. No one wants to see this on our streets and I again appeal for calm.”
The suspect is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday on the attempted murder charge as authorities continue investigating both the stabbing and the subsequent unrest.
