Five Nuclear Energy Companies Selected to Build Micro Reactors at US Army Bases

The U.S. Army has launched a program awarding up to $2.2 billion in combined contracts to five private energy vendors to build and operate transportable nuclear microreactors on military bases.

Just the News reports the Army announced Wednesday that its Janus Program has selected five nuclear energy companies to own, build and operate nuclear microreactors at bases in North Carolina, Kentucky, Texas, Georgia and New York.

The news comes on the heels an executive order President Donald Trump signed that directs the Army to build the first Army-regulated reactor to operate on a military installation by September 2028.

With the private-sector investment, the Army said it expects to build and operate more than 20 nuclear microreactors across Department of War installations to provide reliable electricity without the need for frequent refueling.

According to the U.S. Department of War, the goal is to provide independent, secure on-site baseload power to protect critical military installations from civilian electrical grid failures, cyberattacks, or physical sabotage.

Just the News reports that each microreactor produces less than 20 megawatts of electricity—enough to power a small town or military base—and is designed to be easily transported by truck, rail, ship, or aircraft.

The reactors will follow strict safety standards similar to commercial plants, but will be regulated directly by the Army rather than the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Defense Scoop reports that the initial five bases will include Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Fort Campbell, Kentucky, Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Drum, New York.

Although roughly a dozen companies are currently developing designs for the microreactors, none have been built yet.
