Many moons ago, while serving in Congress, I heard a senior member of the GOP House leadership offer this assessment of the Democrats’ strategy on a particular issue: “The Democrats always overplay their hand.”
Heading into the 2026 midterm elections, however, it seems less a case of the Democrat minority overplaying its hand than of revealing it.
Everyone is well-versed in the historical fact that a president’s party usually loses seats in a midterm election. As this is President Trump’s second midterm election, early projections suggest it will prove as disastrous for the GOP as the first one was in 2018.
For months, Democrats have charted a canny political course: Decry the Trump administration on issues ranging from “affordability” to the Iran conflict while doing their level best to dissemble about their own radical policies, muting and masking them to appear “moderate” until after retaking the House and/or Senate in what many have confidently forecast as a “blue wave” election.
Sure, there have been GOP and right-of-center pundits decrying the Democrats’ refusal to present a specific agenda for voters to consider before casting their ballots. But that was standard fare from a majority party that would naturally prefer to run against its opponents’ words rather than its own deeds, which would remain voters’ foremost concern regardless. (Nor can one blame the GOP for trying to maximize any advantage, however small, in hopes of staving off defeat and retaining its majority.)
In fact, the GOP’s demands that Democrats reveal their agenda were an auspicious omen for the latter. They demonstrated that the Democrats’ midterm strategy was historically sound and well executed. It recalls the scene in Cool Hand Luke when Dragline (George Kennedy) teases Luke (Paul Newman) for bluffing his way to victory in a poker game, only for Luke to calmly retort, “Yeah, well . . . sometimes nothin’ can be a real cool hand.”
Yet, far from overplaying their hand, this “cool hand” strategy ultimately proved too conservative for the party’s own good—or at least for the Democrat establishment.

The problem for Democrats, however, is that their own grassroots demand a specific, radical agenda that sharply distinguishes them from the MAGA/GOP “fascists.” Enter the Democratic Socialists of America, the “Justice Democrats,” and Bernie Sanders-endorsed progressives. Whichever faction they identify with, it is decidedly not the establishment.
The party’s socialist insurgents have openly run on the sort of radical socialist and culturally Marxist agenda that would preclude election almost anywhere in America outside deep-blue urban enclaves such as New York City and Denver. They are now running neck and neck with establishment Democrats in Senate primaries, including Michigan, where the Democrat establishment is doing everything it can to stop the nomination of the Bernie Sanders-endorsed candidate. Good luck with that. Within Democrat primaries, these ideological insurgents possess the energy, enthusiasm, and, perhaps most importantly, momentum. This is the Democrat establishment’s nightmare.
These Democrat socialist insurgents have entered—and won—party primaries from city halls to Congress. But winning a primary is only the first step; the next, and far more consequential one, is winning the general election and, with it, the contested office. As President Trump’s record of endorsing Republicans who won their primaries only to lose in the general election attests, that remains the more difficult race.
For the “cool hand” Democrat establishment, its strategy of equating silence with moderation has been rent asunder by the living, breathing embodiments of radical socialism now defining the party’s agenda for the midterms and beyond. To paraphrase the Captain (Strother Martin): “What we’ve got here is failure to miscommunicate.”
This revelatory miscommunication is a recipe for Democrats to stray beyond the bounds of sanity and snatch midterm defeat from the jaws of victory.
If so, as their socialist insurgents loudly and proudly proclaim they are reimagining their party, fundamentally transforming America, and powering it toward victory, the Democrat establishment may be left sputtering and muttering, “I wish you’d stop being so good to me, Captain.”
